Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Canada
Do we need to hire a lawyer?
My 20 year old son has been charged with mischief under $5000. He has pleaded guilty and we have a court date. Since he has pleaded guilty, do we have to hire a lawyer? If yes, is this costly?

Re: Do we need to hire a lawyer?
Depending on your jurisdiction, you do not likely need to hire a lawyer. Your son should speak to your local duty counsel (court appointed lawyer) on the date of his hearing or his next appearence to ensure he fully understands the charges and possible sentences. The duty counsel will also help him understand what information could be presented to the judge to place him in the 'best possible light'.
