Legal Question in Immigration Law in Canada

Canadian Immigration

my son,age 22 and a u.s. citizen, has been living illegally in canada for 3 yrs. he shares an apartment with a canadian citizen and has an ''under the table'' job. he is engaged to a canadian citizen whom he has known for 7 mos. he was in the u.s. with her over christmas and was detained at the seattle/canada border going back to b.c. he has been ordered to leave canada by 1-27-07 or he will be arrested and deported. obvoiusly, he does not want to leave. he has no desirable job skills and has no interest in college.

short of marriage, is there any way he can stay? can he somehow ''short cut'' the 1 yr. common law requirement and be sponsored by his fiance immediately?
