A contract does not have to be written or approved by a lawyer to be valid. But non-lawyers often don't know how to write a valid contract, and make mistakes that come back to haunt them later. Even when they write a contract that meets all the legal requirements, they often fail to include provisions that are worth having even though the law doesn't require them.

There can be problems even if you're using a standard form and/or adapting a contract that someone else used previously. Such documents may have been inadequate to begin with (especially if they were prepared in another state with different laws), may have become outdated, or may simply not address your particular needs.
