can a business garnish wages for accidental damage to equipment required to do the job?

As a Franchise Attorney I can this. Wages can only be garnished pursuant to a court order or judgment. The employer can't just decide to do this on their own, and especially because of accidental damage to equipment. That's why they carry insurance. It sounds like you need to contact your local employment development or labor department. They will investigate and take any corrective action that's warranted. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
