Legal Question in Business Law in Colorado
I live in Colorado. I signed a contract for Karate Training for my son with a school. The contract is for 6 years and $25,000. It has been a year and my son is no longer interested in learning karate. They are not allowing me to cancel the contract even though I was verbally told at the time of signing if he didn't like karate and changed his mind I could give 30 days notice. Am I legally bound to pay the remainder of the contract for services that will not be given? Also, is 6 years a legal contract length in Colorado?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Sorry for the problems. This is why you should never accept any oral agreements that are not explicitly provided in the written contract. You can pretty much guarantee that the written contract does not provide this right to terminate that you thought you had.
I would strongly recommend that you contact an attorney and provide them the contract and additional facts. You may want to threaten a suit because this may be a matter of fraud or other breach of contract. Given that you have a written contract you have a tough road, but it is not impossible.
If you dont know of any attorneys, contact people you know and trust for referrals. If you have no referrals you should review the attorneys on this site or contact your local bar association for their referral program.
