Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Colorado

Stalking/Harassment

I am a social worker at a homeless shelter. Two years ago I worked with a resident who was discharged for threatening another person. The resident later left a threatening message stating he would decapitate my boss. He has sent angry/threatening letters and emails and has tried to sue me and the homeless shelter. Although the lawsuit was dismissed. Recently he called my work while i was not there threatening me. Saying he will ''get me'' called me names. I feel that he is escalating and fixating on this situation and me in particular. My question is what are my rights to prevent something worse happening, remain and feel safe at my work and in the community? What can i expect of my employer to ensure my safety?

Re: Stalking/Harassment

You could get a civil protection order commanding him to have no contact with the shelter or with you, and to stay away from the shelter and you. Sounds like this guy has a mental illness, is off his meds and may need police contact to assess his dangerousness to himself or others.

If he violates the court order in any way, he can be arrested and jailed.

I'm guessing the shelter doesn't want this guy anywhere near them, and would be happy to call the cops anytime he showed up.

Though these steps won't "ensure" your safety, they'll discourage these contacts.

Good luck. I would hope this guy would get some help, but failing that, an inattentive truck driver couldn't hurt.
