Right to privacy

My husband has been a truck driver for several years but has recently decided to switch careers, So he has been at our home for the past week. I live in a mobile home park and they have sent me a letter stating if I do not give them his social security number so that the may do a criminal backround check they will take me to court. Keeping in mind he has only been home a week and was generally never here before. I called and they told me they would also need $20 to do so, I asked if they could use the criminal backround check from his previous employer and they stated no. I just didnt know what kind of right they have to get into our private business like that and ask that we pay for it? We are not afraid of them finding anything but are really upset that they can demand such a request and send us such a threating letter when he has only been home 1 week. Thank you in advance for any response that we may get.

You should review your agreement with the mobile home park where you live. It probably says they have the right to conduct such background examinations, to charge you the reasonable cost of doing so, and to evict you if you fail to comply or if the results are unsatisfactory.

There are several reasons why the park would not accept the background check run by your husband's previous employer. For one thing, the park has no way of knowing whether the prior check was thorough or reliable. It is also possible that he has committed crimes since that report was run, or that older crimes which had not yet been added to his record have been by now.
