Any laborer or supplier who worked on a property can file a mechanic's lien against the property and name the general contractor. You must provide written notice to both the property owner and the GC at least 10 days before filing the lien.Often, the threat of a lien is enough to get the owner to see that you are paid. You do not have to file a lawsuit to foreclose the lien.
There are deadlines that must be observed if you want to foreclose the lien, so it is best you discuss the matter with an attorney.
