Legal Question in Construction Law in Colorado

We recently hired a local contractor to replace our roof. He was a referral from a trusted neighbor. We paid up front and was told that their would be no additional charges. We told him if there were we could not afford it. My wife and myseldf were told 3 times that this was the complete cost and He stated we are not a company that will come back for more. I latter called the contractor and reminded him that a permit need to be pulled and he informed me that his compnay was professional and his people were all licensed and they would pull the permit. He has since called my wife hallf way through the job and told us the home owner is to pull the permit. The roof is 99% complete and now he is calling telling me I need to pay for the labor. What are my options. I don't want a lein on my house if he doesn't pay the subs and I will have to deal with the city on the permit issue. Help in Aurora, co

So you don't have a written agreement? If so, that was unfortunate. Ultimately, if the don't complete the project and put a lien on the property you will have to sue for breach of contract and to remove the lien. I hope you have other people to act as witnesses to your agreement with the contractor. Speak with an attorney if this goes further.
