Am I entitled to file a continuance for a summons to appear in court for a debt?

Entitled? No. However, if you file an answer (and pay the filing fee) before the summons return date then you are not required to appear on the initial summons return date. The case will be set for trial a couple months (or more depending on the court) in the future.
