Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Colorado

My ex-step mother received a call at her parent's house from a supposed credit agency saying they were trying to issue me my third summons and that I would go to jail unless I called them that day. I called the number and they answered, "corporate office". I found that strange, so I then called my local county courts. The courts said that all cases I had ever been involved in were closed and there was nothing. The number then called me back and I refused to give any information until I spoke with a lawyer. It seemed strange they would contact my ex-stepmother's parents instead of me or my parents considering the courts have my phone number. I thought it was a scam and looked up leal practices for credit agencies and found they were doing at least four things that were illegal. I forgot about it and now 2 months later, she is receiving those calls again. What should I do?

You should contact an attorney and consider suing the collection agency for any violations. Assuming this is a debt collector, they must follow the rules under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Colorado act. Telling someone that you are going to prison over a debt over a case that has not been filed violates these acts. There also may be issues as to them calling.

You should act quickly and should, ideally, get an attorney. If you dont want to get an attorney, then learn the laws and start asserting your rights and consider claims. They may be liable for damages for their violations.
