after a guilty plea is entered and before sentencing, can a defendant fire their lawyer and hire new lawyer to finish?

Yes, you can have a different lawyer at sentencing.

You can certainly fire your attorney at any time, but you'll probably have to file a motion with the court to do that. Although you can fire an attorney for no cause at all, it may be helpful to enumerate your grievances.

If you are unable to file it yourself, ask your lame-duck lawyer to do this one last thing for you.
