Usually you can fire appointed (state paid) counsel, whether there is a conflict or not. However, that free counsel is your only free counsel. You will need to hire other counsel or represent yourself.

Go ahead: knock yourself out. I say that deliberately, because usually -- not always, but usually -- that's exactly what you do to your case when you dump the one man or woman who might actually help you.

Most public defenders are dedicated lawyers who, though overworked, do their best for their clients, who without them face the power of the state on their own.

Good luck, and think carefully about whether you can handle the system better than the public defender you don't like.
