Generally once you go in front of a magistrate they will give you a bond and a court date. However, it is not required that they give you this immediately. They have 10 days to charge you and can ask for an extention under the appropriate circumstances. If they are holding you with no bond or court date, it may be in your best interest to get an attorney to investigate the situation and eventually argue on your behalf at a bond reduction hearing.

If you are being held without bond, you will sit in jail until a court date is set. But in such a case, special rights come to you-- and you would best be served by getting counsel immediately.
