The penalty for a class 2 misdemeanor is 90 days to a year in jail, $150 to $1000 in fines, or both. But unless you're Jack the Ripper, you won't get that.
Instead, if this is your first offense, you'll likely be offered a deferred sentence with, at most, 8 hours of community service. You'll also have to stay clear of the place where the alleged theft happened.
If you meet the conditions of the deferred, the case will be dismissed, and you can seal the record.
Or, of course, you can hire a $500 an hour attorney and fight this all the way to the Supreme Court.
Good luck, with the plea or with the Supremes.
