Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado
Returning stolen property
I came across a stolen laptop computer. My brother borrowed it from a friend who got it from a friend who was probably the one that stole it. They'd like to get it off their hands.
I'd like to take it so that I may return it to its rightful owner. But, I sure as hell am not going to track down the owner and hand him his computer. I want to hand it over to the police and have them track down the owner. Problem is, I'm afraid I'll get nailed for the crime.
Is it worth it to do the right thing, or should I just reformat and reinstall?

Re: Returning stolen property
Well, keeping it (or selling it or even throwing it away, if you get caught) and knowing that it is stolen is a felony (if value is more than $500), so that is not a good idea. I suggest that you go to the local police station and turn it in. I know that is scary. Two things you can do - get an attorney to help you or mail it in anonymously with an explanation - no names. I would be happy to help you.
