Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado
shopliftin
I was caught shoplifting in a King Soopers for about $30 worth of stuff. I got the civil restitution from the store for $250, and a ticket from the P.D. for a court date for theft. wasn't arrested but I have NO criminal history whatsoever and am VERY worried about my record and future. I definitely don't have the money to get a lawyer. will they drop this to a lesser charge? What should I do? Should I be concerned? First time ever committing a crime....it feels awful.

Re: shopliftin
They are likely to offer you a deferred sentence, meaning that if you stay out of trouble, do some community service, and stay away from King Soopers, your case will be dismissed after a certain number of months and there will be no record of a conviction (there will be a record of the arrest). They'll probably offer a 9-month deferred; because of the low value of the theft, though, ask for six months instead, and be sure to finish your community service hours in that time.
If I were you I'd ignore the civil claim for $250; they are rarely pursued.
Good luck. You made a mistake. Humans do that.
