Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado

My son got caught shoplifting 3 months ago. I was contacted this week to let me know there would be a court date in August. That phone call was the first I had heard of him being caught shoplifting. I was not contacted by the police at the time of the incident and I was not contacted anytime after except for the court notification. My son is 17, legally was I supposed to be notified at the time the crime occurred? Does it change anything in regards to the charges seeing as how I was not notified?

There is no legal requirement that you need to be notified by the police of this action, the only legal requirement is they cannot interrogate/question your son if he is in custody without your consent.
