subpoenas

I was subpoenaed to court to testify against someone and I don't want to testify. Do I have to go? What are my options?

Re: subpoenas

A subpoena is a court order compelling you to testify. That means if you don't go merely because you don't want to go, you may be found in contempt of court and may be fined or jailed.

The DA may or may not file a complaint asking for a hearing to show cause why you should not be held in contempt. That would likely depend upon the importance of the case, and the importance of your testimony to the case.

If you do go and are asked a question the answer to which you feel may incriminate you, you cannot be forced to answer, and you cannot be penalized for not answering.

Good luck.
