Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado
Theft
I just got charged with stealing groceries from a Walmart. It was under $500 of merchandise. Then about 3 weeks later I got caught walking out of another store with a pack of gum. I have a court date on April 12, 2007. I have never been in trouble with the law ever before and am wondering what my options are for these stupid mistakes.

Re: Theft
Your options are to go to trial and make the state prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you stole, or talk with the DA and make a deal to plead guilty to misdemeanor theft in exchange for a deferred sentence. If you are offered a deferred, that means that if you stay out of trouble, do some community service, and perhaps a class, at the end of (probably) 9 months your case will be dismissed.
You might also think about giving up chewing gum.
Good luck.
