Legal Question in Criminal Law in Colorado

Theft and forgery charge

I have been charged with felony theft, forgery of checks or commercial instruments and conspiracy to commit theft. I was denied a public defender based on my income, but I cannot afford a lawyer. So I'm forced to represent myself. What are the key things that I will need to know and/or do in representing myself. I am a co-defendant in this case. The other person got 2 yrs probation. Also is there any way I can get a copy of what was said in court when the other person went?

Re: Theft and forgery charge

You can get a transcript of what was said in court by requesting a transcript. Those cost $2.35 a page. You can also file a motion for the transcript to be done at state expense (free to you). BUT bear in mind that nothing good happens automatically. Just asking for a transcript WILL NOT BE ENOUGH.

The key thing to know if you are representing yourself is that you will have a fool for a lawyer. There are simply too many things you will not think of nor understand, and way too many for this kind of question/answer format.

Beg or borrow (do not steal; you're facing enough charges) the money to hire a lawyer. Although it is possible you will then have two fools at the defense table, you are infinitely more likely to succeed.

Good luck.
