Is it worth getting someone a lawyer if the feds picked up his gun case and they are trying to hit him with a hibitual offender?

Yes. You can derail the habitual sentence if you successfully attack one or more of the past convictions. Habitual sentence enhancements result in very, very long sentences. A collateral attack on convictions could be worth 10, 20, 40 years.
