Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado
Do I need an attorney?
I am 21 years old and about 2and a half weeks ago my father walked out on my family .That same evening my sister who is 12 years of age went to my mother and basically said she had been sexually assualted by our father. My mother who has an attorney filed for divorce.
We went to the police who did not find enough to criminally charge just yet. But my father is after joint custody of my brother and sister ,and I personally feel they are not safe with him because I am concerned about what happened with my sister and he has in the past been abusive to myself and my brother and sister.

This does not sound to me like a situation in which you need an attorney. However, you should contact your mother's attorney and express your concerns. You can volunteer to testify about your experiences with your father and why you are concerned for your siblings if they are placed in his care. If the Court appoints a Child and Family Investigator (CFI), be sure to ask your mother to have that person speak with you. You can explain your experiences and your concerns to that person, who can then take it into consideration in making the recommendation to the Court.
Be careful that you are acting out of genuine concern for the safety of your siblings, and not out of anger at your father for walking out. You want to be certain that you are being completely honest with yourself first, then also with whomever you communicate to. You don't want to end up with regrets either about anything you said or did, or anything you did not say or do.
God bless you and yours.
