Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado
back child support
I have a Court Order for child support from 1987 out of Durango, Colorado ($200/mo). I have never been paid child support by the ex-husband. The children are now both over 21 (they are 22 & 24 now). He lives in Texas, and I live in California. We divorced when the kids were 2 & 4, so I am guessing we are looking at at least 18 or so years of back pay. He now has assets. I have been told I need a lawyer in Colorado since that is where the Order was issued. I need assistance in collecting.

Start with a lawyer in Texas, which you will need to file and enforce in Texas. Follow his directions concerning what you will need from Colorada.
Re: back child support
there definitely are some jurisdictional issues here, however, they may not be as complicated as they seem on the surface. if you can email me directly and let me know a little more on the situation, as well as what assets your ex may now have to satisfy any judgments in your favor, i may be able to further assist you in this matter legally.

Mr. McCrary was correct as far as it went.
You have two states for jurisdiction: CO and TX. CA will not work.
You could get a wage assignment from CO that TX employer should honor with the fairly new federal rules.
To grab assets other than wages, you would have to register the CO judgment in TX and then execute on assets.

First you need to establish the arrearage. This can be done in either California or Colorado. Then you will need ot enforce it in the State (Texas) where he resides.
I suggest that you consult with an experienced family law lawyer. Experience is not expensive, it's priceless!
