Child Custody

My child's biological father is incarserated. I want to make sure that when he gets out he will not be able to take my child. My question is, Do I need to get full custody of her?

Obtaining sole custody would likely help; however, he will still have parental rights, e.g. to visitation, until he relinquishes them, which he cannot be forced to do, except in unusual circumstances.
