Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado

When does child support end

In Colorado, what is the age at which child support ends? Does anything have to be filed with the court to stop making child support payments, or does it just stop?

Re: When does child support end

Generally, child support ends when the child turns 19, although there are some exceptions. Child support can end earlier if the child is emancipated before age 19, or in some situations, child support can continue beyond age 19 if the child is a special needs child, still in high school, and there are additional rules that apply in those circumstances.

As to the actual stopping of child support, what action needs to be taken depends on the individual facts, and what your final agreement states. In some cases, such as if you made payment directly to your ex, no court action may be necessary, but if your wages are being garnished, some additional court action may be necessary. Either way, though, it's worth consulting with an attorney to see when you can stop paying child support and if there is any further action you need to take.

Hope this helps!
