Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado
child support
My son is 32 yrs of age and lives in colorado. His mother is claiming I owe back child support. I was in arrears with payment during the time I was making payments. To bring the payments current his mother and I agreed that I would pay the sum of $10,000 which I did. I have not been required to make a payment in the last 14 yrs. I just received notice that I owe back child support. His mother has recently fallen on financial hard times and has contacted the state in hopes of collecting additional child support. I am paid in full with my support although I don't have record of this because payment was always made to her and not the state. I do have a notorized agreement from her stating I am paid in full with the $10,000 payment I made. Also, in the last 2 yrs I have given my son over $8,000 for medical bills, although this was not considered child support. My question is, do I owe additional child support?

Re: child support
Generally child support ends when the child reaches 18, the child dies, or is emancipated. Your child support has certainly ended based on your son’s age. However, it is not clear from the facts whether the $10K payment was to bring the payments current, which also ended the support payments or whether after the $10K you fell behind again. Either way you should have an Attorney review your case and documentation ASAP to determine whether you are still liable for the support payments. As for the $8K in medical payments they would probably have no bearing on Past Due support payments if in fact you owe it at all.
