Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado
Divorce, buying a new car
I am 15 days away from my the end of the 90 divorce process. My wife and I filed our paper work with agreements upon all our possessions, and also asked for a decree from the court. So the whole divorce has been running ''smooth''. However, I am in need of a new car, really bad. How much am I risking by buying a new car right now with only 15 days left? It will be financed 100% by me. She's not the kind of person that will come after my new possession, but you never know.

Your degree of risk at this point is minimal. Since you have already filed full agreements with the Court, and have already completed your disclosures, it is not relevant as a practical matter. As a legal matter, if were to be raised, you would need to show the Court that it was being financed by you, and that any funds being put into it were funds that were already disclosed to her (as opposed to using some undisclosed account to put a $15,000 down payment on it for example). Under those circumstances, the Court would award both the vehicle and the debt on it to you, without any compensation back to her if the matter was put before it.
