If my husband gave me a car and stated openly to family and friends that he purchased it for me as a gift and we are separated does he have rights to this property?

In short, possibly, if it was purchased after you were married. It may be deemed to be marital property, even though he stated he was giving it to you. Gifts between spouses are not always treated as separate property. Sometimes they are viewed as gifts to the whole family, and therefore marital property.
