Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado

Grandparental visitation and GAL

Is there a way for a grandparent to petition the court for visitation rights if no custody action has been filed by the parents of the grandchild? And/or can a grandparent petition the court for appointment of a guardian ad litem if no custody action has been filed by the parents of the grandchild? We are dealing with unmarried teen parents who have ended their relationship, and who see no need to file a petition for custody. They are essentially sharing custody by means of an informal arrangement. We would like to protect our rights and our grandchild's rights.

Re: Grandparental visitation and GAL

Grandparents have standing to file motions regarding their grandchildren under Colorado law. No underlying custody action is necessary.
