Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado

information about obtaining non-parental custody of a minor family member

Please help me find information or where to go to find help in obtaining custody of my 15 year old niece who lives in Colorado. Currently my niece lives with her mother (my brother-in-laws ex-girlfriend)in sub normal conditions. She is living with and abusive boyfriend (whom were told has been previously arrested for domestic violence at this home) My niece has tried to live with her mothers parents and has been moved back and forth. My niece has expressed the interest and need to get out of that invironment and has gotten to the point of becoming a runaway. At this time we have talked her out of coming to California that way, by assuring her that we will try to do all we can legally. Both myself and my husband have 2 children her age and have a very stable life. Her father at this time is in the California State Prison. This family needs to think of this child and we need help. We are her only hope of a normal teen life. Most other members of my husbands family are not financially nor responsible enough to help her. What can we do to make this happen short of spending everything we have to make it happen. Please help !!

Re: information about obtaining non-parental custody of a minor family member

First off I would retain a Colorado attorney because the case would need to be filed in CO. I would also contact the Department of Children Services or its equivilent in CO and make an abuse complaint, and offer to be the children's guardian.
