If a step parent receives consent to adopt a child in a joint custody situation will the parent allowing the adoption still have to pay child support?

Re: Step parent adoption
My name is Alexandra White and I am an attorney with The Harris Law Firm. A step parent adoption results in the termination of the parent child relationship between the consenting biological parent and the child. Therefore, from the completion of the adoption and forward, the consenting parent's child support obligation terminates as well. However, any child support arrearages accruing prior to the adoption are still owed and subject to enforcement. Step parent adoptions are complex procedures, however, and without knowing all of the circumstances involved in your case, it is difficult to give you information that is specific. It is always important to seek legal advice when considering a step parent adoption--whether you are the consenting biological parent or the step parent who is adopting. Our firm offers 45 minute consultations at a reduced fee of $150.00. If you are interested, please contact us directly at (303) 299-9484. I hope that the general information I have provided to you is helpful. Thank you for posting your question.
