i want to marry my girlfriend who is a us citizen, we have a son together and are living together, how long will it take for me to become a resident or a citizen?

Assuming your girlfriend entered the U.S. legally, then it would take her approximately 6-7 months to receive the green card.

Dear Inquirer:

If you are present in the US pursuant to a lawful admission, i.e. you came here legally, then you could file an application for adjustment of status to green card without leaving the US. This process takes approximately 1 year, however, you may obtain a work permit within 90 days. If you remain married to a US Citizen, you can apply for citizenship three years after you obtain the green card.
