Legal Question in International Law in Colorado
As an American citizen currently living abroad, I have started a relationship with a 17-year-old individual from Brazil. Given that the age of consent in Brazil is 14 and in my home state in the U.S. it is 16, I am confused about the legal implications of our relationship. Could you please clarify how age of consent laws apply in this context? Specifically:Is it legal for me to date someone under 18 while I am abroad? Does the age of consent from my state or Brazil apply in this situation? How might these regulations impact my plans to apply for a fiancé visa in the future?

Interesting question. The laws of the place where the conduct is happening are the laws which apply.
Tinted windows on your car are allowed in New Jersey, but if you drive into New York you may get a ticket.
The phrase "age of consent" is usually used in the context of marriage, so I don't know exactly what you mean when you use this phrase and refer to "dating."
I'm fairly certain there are US federal laws which make it a crime for a US person to travel to a foreign country for the purpose of sex with a minor. I can't recall the specifics though. But those laws wouldn't apply, probably, in a marriage situation.
Interesting fact pattern and I wish I could be more helpful. Someone would really have to dig into the laws to give a better answer.
Good luck.
