Bad reference from former supervisor keeping me from getting job offers

5 years ago I left a job due to a hostile work environment involving personality conflicts with supervisor . Recently layed off from another job, now that supervisor from the old job is giving an extremely bad reference for me that has kept me from getting new work in my chosen career field and adversely affected my livelihood and means to provide for my family(law enforcement - forensic crime lab). By law, can this supervisor give out this biased and untruthful information or just dates of employment, salary and wether or not you would rehire this individual? What rights do I have? Could I send a cease and desist letter to him and CC his supervisor? Should I seek legal representation? Thanks!

If the former employer is giving out false information, that employer can be sued. These suits have generally been fairly successful - so much than most employers usually only confirm job history. See an employment law attorney specialist.
