Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Colorado
colorado prostitution/sex offense laws
To whom it may concern,
I am a Colorado Massage Therapist who works with many sexually wounded clients. I try to facilitate healing in those areas where issues may arise and want to help my clients reintegrate a healthy relationship with their sensuality and sexuality back into their lives without violating any "prostitution" laws. I want to exand the scope of my practice to include sensual massage, emotional clearing, sexual couceling, etc. but want to educate myself so as not to run into conflict with the law.
I am wanting to find out what is considered prostitution or a sex offense according to Colorado Law, and what is considered acceptable or legal sexual services.(specifically interested in Boulder). Can you also advise me on the best way for a layperson to learn about and gather information on laws that they need to research. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerly,

No pun intended, but your question has some rather ticklish legal issues from which problems can arise. I would suggest you find a Colorado attorney with some experience in criminal law to advise you on these issues. Also, you might wish to check any applicable licensing regulations regarding massage therapists because that would be a potential area for problems with the licensing board, etc.
With respect to checking the statutes, there is a section in this internet site to find the statutes from various states including Colorado or there is also www.lawcrawler.com
Good luck. All the best.
Re: colorado prostitution/sex offense laws
http://www.thelawyerpages.com will lead you to the CO statutes defining prostitution. Anything which falls within that definition is prohibited, anything which does not is not.
Be aware that the area you are in is fraught with dangers, and you may be acting in a professional counseling capacity for which you are not licensed and for which you could be penalized.
Also, it is forbidden in most states for a professional to engage in sexual relations with a client under any circumstances, and the consequences for doing so may be dire.
We recommend a consultation with our CO attorney. Email us if you have further interest.
