Legal Question in Personal Injury in Colorado
injured doing volunteer work
I sustained a complex femur fracture on 08/13/2007. I had surgery and discharged from hospital. I don't have insurance, and i am unable to work. My injury's include head, neck and back pain. my ribs, abdomen, hips, legs, inner thighs, and groin area are black and blue. I cannot bear weight on my lower left extremity for four to six months, and i am unsure if i will ever be able to work again. the extent of my injury in still unknown. I filed a claim on 09/17/2007 with the nonprofit organizations insurance company. I was told they would get back to me in a few days. Its been over a month that i have been injured and with out income and I am in desperate need of financial help. Who do I ask to help me? Should I contact a lawyer. This whole event that has happened has left me physically and mentally exhausted, and with no way to support myself. I have been living with my girlfriend. She has been taking care of me, and I have been driving her insane. She is about ready to leave my sorry ass. How can I get some help prior to the insurance company calling me back.

First, yes, you need to consult an attorney. This case has several issues involved, including whether the Colorado Workers Compensation Statute can be extended to your case and, if not, whether your injury was the result of negligence on the part of the non-profit. These questions are frequently not as simple as they may seem. Because I do not handle Colorado Workers Compensation, and I think you need to review that issue, I suggest that you start with an attorney who handles both workers comp and straight forward personal injury claims. A good place to start for a referral is the Colorado Bar Association's lawyer referral service. Information can be found at http://www.cobar.org/. I strongly urge you to pursue this as quickly as possible to avoid prejudice to your rights that may result from delay.
