Legal Question in Traffic Law in Colorado

Police jurisdiction on private property

A got a ticket from a Federal Hieghts Policeman for ''careless driving'' (4 pts) in an AutoZone parking lot. Do the Police have jurisdiction on private property?

There was a special ''show car'' event being held there, and the property owners had the Police there due to the crowd.

It was a minor ''screech'' that I made, but I'm the ''example.''

Can they do that?

Re: Police jurisdiction on private property

Careless driving does not have a case specifically limiting it to public roads and highways, but other similar offenses do. I think it is just a matter of this argument never getting to the appellate courts. As I recall, reckless driving does have that limitation.

I am not sure that a screech is careless driving anyway. I screech my tires on my 98 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 all the time. The truck does not go fast bc it has no power. I do not think a screech is enough evidence. Now, if the officer saw you spin tires and lose control to some extent, then maybe they have a better case.

Generally, traffic laws do not apply on private property, but some do - like DUI.
