Re: estate, probate

The personal representative is what used to be called an "executor." This person is responsible for the administration of the estate, including payment of creditors, gathering and accounting for estate property, and making distributions to beneficiaries. Even if an individual is nominated in a will to serve as personal representative, the individual generally has no authority to act until appointed as personal representative by the probate court.
