Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Colorado
What is the inheritance age?
When my father died, the money he left me was invested and maintained by my grandparents. I was to inherit it when I turned 18, but about a year ago my grandfather told me they had changed the law so as that I wouldn't inherit until I was 21. Is this true? and is there no grandfather clause for the estates established before the law change?
Thank you

Re: What is the inheritance age?
The answer depends on how your inheritance was left. You should review the terms of the Will and the documents for establishing the account into which your inheritance was placed.
If the Will required your inheritance to be witheld until age 21, then there is your answer. Otherwise, it would then depend on the terms of the account that was established for your benefit.
If you have questions concerning these documents, or your situation, then you should engage the services of a qualified trust and estate lawyer to assist you.
Re: What is the inheritance age?
Under Colorado law, a person 18 years or older may generally receive an inheritance outright unless there is an applicable will provision that places additional restrictions on the distribution of the inheritance. To be certain whether you are currently entitled to receive your earlier inheritance, it would be necessary to review the will and/or any court orders regarding the probate and distribution of your father's estate.
