Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Connecticut
deceased ex husband's bankruptcy
I need to know if I can be held responsible for my ex husband's debts, he had filed in 1999, after we were divorced and he passed away in February of 2000. They had dismissed the bankruptcy case because he had passed away. But, now it has come to my attention that the debts are showing up on my credit report.
Am I responsible for these bills, is there a way to fight it?

Re: deceased ex husband's bankruptcy
Connecticut is not a community property state and you are not liable for your former husband's debt. There are some exceptions, 1. any debts that you guaranteed 2. credit cards that you have used as an additional card holder and 3. medical bills (for a period of time in which you were married).
If the debts are on your credit report, you should file a complaint with the credit bureau, they have 30 days to receive verification of the debt. In the event that the creditor will not remove the debt, you will need to demand something with your signature indicating that you has agreed to pay the debt, such as a credit card application or a user card that you have charged against.
