Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Connecticut

Can I file bankruptcy myself?

After doing some research, I have concluded that I need to file

bankruptcy. Can I do this myself or should I retain a lawyer? I do not

own a home or other property. I am single and unemployed. I pay no

alimony or child support. My debts are almost 100% credit card debt.

Thanky

For the lay person, Bankruptcy is a complicated process. There are a number of forms to fill out, and then there is the knowledge of the code, property exemptions (and we're not just talking about real estate, you have to account for your personal belongings as well). To guarantee that the process runs as smooth as possible, get a good and experienced local attorney.

Good luck.

Although bankruptcy appears to only be about completion of forms, the forms and issues are rather complex. Further, a problem could have far reaching consequences (both civil and criminal). You may not know of a problem for a number of years (such as when you go to buy a house or car). I believe that the money spent for an experienced lawyer with bankruptcy experience is vital. Some attorneys will take the case with an installment payment agreement.
