Legal Question in Construction Law in Connecticut
Contractor suing us for payment
We have 5 children and needed to add rooms to our basement, i.e. family room, master bedroom & office. During the finishing phase I noticed that the ''new''walls were (which included framing) crooked, not level and bulging. The ceilings look like the waves of the ocean. I advised the contractor about this and he said that as soon as I paint it (in the contract it states that the work would be finished in preparation for painting and the homeowner will paint) everything would look fine. I used very expensive paint and the walls looked 10x worse. As a matter of fact, I don't think the ''taper'' even sanded the compound on the walls and ceilings. I withheld the last payment and asked the contractor to repairs his shoddy work before the job was complete. He said that this is standard work and normal for walls to look this way. I told him I wouldn't pay him and now he is suing me. I hired another contractor to look at the job and they all ask if I did it myself LOL. The contractor is highly regarded in my state and boasts of awards etc. Is it because that the work was a $20,000 job .vs a $100,000 job that I receive this poor workmanship, and can I beat this case?

Re: Contractor suing us for payment
It certainly sounds like you have a good defense to the suit. The price of the project does not determine your rights in this matter. If you paid for a quality contractor and he make a mistake, then you have remedies available to you.
I would also need to take a look at the contract involved.
