Legal Question in Construction Law in Connecticut

work performed without express verbal or written consent of owner

A boyfriend in the construction business arranged to have HVAC work done on my condo without my permission. He had all contact with the HVAC company & made special arrangements to have them bill him at his office in MA. He stopped paying them. I was told it wasn't my bill or problem since I didn't order the work nor was I ever billed for it. I haven't spoken with the now ex boyfriend for almost a year and the HVAC co is now threatening me with legal action if I don't pay for the work. I don't even know how much the bill is as I have never received one from them and it has been over a year since they did the work. I feel victimized and bullied. What are my rights as a homeowner/consumer?

Re: work performed without express verbal or written consent of owner

The problem that I see is that you accepted and benefitted from the work. Even though the boyfriend hired them and agreed to pay them, you didn't object. (You must have known about it, it was your condo)

I think you owe the money and you should pay it.

However, I also think you may be successful in a suit against the ex-boyfriend. He agreed to take care of it and he breached that agreement by not completing payment.

I don't know how much the work was but small claims is available up to $5,000.00.
