Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

CC debt by authorized user

Summary: Years ago my wife made her brother (with bad credit) an authorized user on a CC she didn't use so he could travel for work (supposed to be reimbursed). She did not pay attention; the card was closed years ago, and he has tried to make minimal payments for years; she has helped by transfering thousands, but on a $7,000 limit card It has gone to collections for ~$9,600. Is there a way for them to legally transfer that debt to him, he feels terrible and is willing to do what is necessary since he is responsible. The multiple collection agencies only want to harass and won't legitimately negotiate a settlement.

Generally, creditors will not "transfer" a debt to one debtor when there are more than one. They want the ability to seek reimbursement from as many debtors as possible.

The only way to absolve your wife is- her brother will have to borrow the money, pay off the old debt and then owe the new creditor.
