Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

What is the federal law on passing bad checks over $200.00?

I work for a dentist and we were recently passed a bad check for $200.00 and I know that over a certain amount it is a federal offense but otherwise I am not sure what we can do about it and what the statute of limitations is on something like this. If you could get back to me asap I would really appreciate it as we would like to take immediate action. Thankyou

Forget federal law; this is too small. First, you send the signer a certified letter, return receipt requested, telling him/her that the check bounced (like s/he doesn't know that already) and that if s/he doesn't come in with $225.00 in cash or money order within seven days of receiving the letter you will take further action. (The extra $25.00 is an admin charge you are entitled to add)

If s/he doesn't come in with the money, go to your local police station, or the police station in the town where s/he lives, and see if they will take a criminal charge. Some police departments will, some won't.

If the cops won't help, you have to go to small claims court, where you pay a $35.00 filing fee, which is added to the $225.00 when you get judgment.

Keep in mind that, annoying as this is, it is ONLY $200.00, not $2,000 or $20,000. Keep a perspective, and don't put more into it than it deserves.
