Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Connecticut

Gave exboyfriend money what are chances of getting it back?

When my ex-boyfriend & I were together I tried to help him by paying off $5000.00 of his debt from my savings account. We were living together and he was heavily into debt and I since we were planning to get married I felt paying $5K of the debt was beneficial to both of us. Since we have now split up I am asking for $4000.00 of it back since eliminating his debt no longer helps me. There is a lot more money involved that I helped him out with but I am only asking for $4K back. He originally planned on paying me 100.00 per month but now thinks that he owes me nothing since I still have the engagement ring that was paid for on my credit card and paid off when we were a couple with both our salaries. I would like to know what grounds I have in getting this money back. Again there is more to it but most of it is his debt that I transfered in my name to help him get from high interest to lower interest rates ect. Those balances are now paid off with only this last $4K in question. Again, my salary helped pay his debt as well as his did which no longer benefits me so I feel asking for $4K vs the 22K debt he started out with is very fair. Please let me know. Thank you

Re: Gave exboyfriend money what are chances of getting it back?

Sorry, miss.

The law in this area is well-settled in Connecticut, and it is not on your side. Unless he actually signed an agreement to repay you that specific $5,000.00, he has no legal obligation to repay you.

By the way, you do not have any obligation to return the ring, and would not have had any such obligation, even if it had been paid for with his money or charged to his account.

If anyone gave you any advance wedding gifts, even his parents, you have no LEGAL obligation to return them, either.
