Legal Question in Criminal Law in Connecticut
I'm 17 years old. Is it illegal for me to date a 23 year old?
1 Answer from Attorneys
Under Connecticut law, both males and females who are under the age of sixteen cannot consent to sexual relations. This means that even if two people choose to have sex, if one of them is under the age of sixteen, the older person could be charged with sexual assault. This is commonly known as statutory rape. Statutory rape is punishable in Connecticut by up to ten years in prison. Further, charges may be filed by the victim, the victims parents or guardians, or the States Attorney. That being said, because sixteen is the age of consent in Connecticut, those above the age of sixteen may date freely without legal consequences.
