Re: Firearm purchase while on court probation

Before you attempt to purchase a firearm, I would speak to your probation officer, if you have one or speak to an attorney and have him review the terms of your probation. Usually, the probation order will have some restriciton on possession of firearms, in this type of situation. Whether or not the Commissioner of Public Saftey will deny your right to purchase a rifle may depend on the facts of the case and the type of disposition of the case--conviction or a pre-trial probation program. I think it is risky to attempt to purchase a firearm while you are on probation, but I don't know what the terms of the probation are or the facts behind the case. Talk to your probation officer or the attorney that handled your case to make sure you are not inviolation of probation. If you do try to purchase a firearm, the Commissioner of Public Saftey's office may deny you the right to purchase during the waiting period when the background check is done.
