Re: Self Representation

What should one do to prepare for a settlement conference in a criminal case?

One hires an attorney experienced in criminal defense and follows the attorney's advice.

To imagine you could get enough guidance on the internet to give you the knowledge acquired in three years of law school, several continuing education seminars and literally years of experience in the courtroom, AND learn to be able to approach the issue in a detached and impartial manner.... well, it is more than a bit niave, it is quite dangerously stupid.

Represent yourself and get ready to spend time in jail.

Re: Self Representation

The best way to prepare is to consult with, or better yet retain, an experienced criminal defense attorney who practices in that jurisdiction. Review your scheduling orders and follow them to the letter; to do that you may need to have copies of the state statutes, the local rules, and jury intsructions. You may need more than this. Consult with a lawyer or you may make a mistake that would prove fatal to your defense. Good Luck.
